A little machine embroidered appliqué I completed a while back featuring an iconic 70’s bubble gum wrapper brand by Dandy. I find it interesting how it depicts an innocent sailor boy for a candy that was most definitely not encouraged to be purchased with pocket money by parents! Or the free water transferable tattoos that came with each gum so we could look like rebels. Match that with the candy cigarettes and we could pretend we smoked and had tattoos!
The other drawback of course was the mess….getting bubble gum stuck in your hair was a traumatic experience, often requiring ice to freeze it out.
And the start of a very bad environmental challenge littering shopping streets with non-biodegradeable gum all over the world - it can take years to decompose and massively adds to microplastic pollution. There you are kids - put your gum in the bin! Hence the start of the iconic ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ logo…
This is a one off embroidery.
