How to choose new cushions for your living room

We are firmly in the depths of winter; dark nights and short daylight hours equal lots of time at home.

Being a month now firmly into the new year, it is often a time that many of us look to utilise this time indoors to redecorate and spring clean.

When your living room starts to look a bit old and tired then the task of redecorating may seem too big of a task but there is one very simple way to instantly update your habitat.

Living spaces are often full of different patterns and colours, from the walls to the curtains, to side tables and ornaments, things can feel hectic but a few choice cushions can pull all the elements together.

A strong geometric or embroidered pattern will bring detail to an interior space or a bright colour choice can uplift and brighten a calm space.

If you take a step back and take in the colours and hues of your environment, it could be the colour of that vase on the shelf, or the colour of the side table or mirror, it could be a painting that takes pride of place in your living room, finding key colours such as these can help you decide on your choice of colour scheme for you sofa and bring everything together.

Getting cushions the same colour as your furniture will just make them look lumpy, uncomfortable and uninviting.

If you take a grey or beige hued living space then often these colours can be complimented with a strong geometric monochrome print or flashes of orange, red or an apple green.

Alternatively, a grey can also be complimented with soft pastels such as a sky blue, or apricot pattern. You can see how your eye is instantly drawn in to the pattern and how it uplifts the environment.

In some cases if you wanted to break up the patterns and hues, you can always look at cushions with typography of iconic sayings, favourite music lyrics or names and dates of importance to add more personality and express a bit of who you aren your living space.

So how many cushions is recommended?

On a typical three seater sofa, 5-6 cushions of varying pattern and texture is the kind of advice from a typical interior designer. Two large (50cmx 50cm) ones in each corner with two smaller( 45cm x 45cm) contrasting in front of those and two rectangular shaped cushion in the middle ( around 50cm x 30cm).

So you can take to scale it down to a two seater sofa and vice versa for a Larger suite.

Once you have n idea of the hues, patterns, quotes and textures you think that you want then its time to go shopping! And remember if you are not feeling very confident in your choices, then sometimes it may be wise to pick a dominant colour that you love and will tie in and stick with that in all your choices of patterns or textures.
